Mastema - Requiem For My Liver
Mastema
is the name of a mythological fallen angel, who taught human beings the very
sciences that they ultimately chose to abuse towards their own violent and
self-destructive ends. This parable - that with knowledge and power comes
responsibility is a pervasive theme in our bands work, and is indicative of our
critical perspective of a modern world wrought by malevolence and greed, nuclear
weapons and war. It is this cross-pollination of myth, philosophy, science, and
politics that is the driving force behind our music.
But don't let the iconography or etymology fool you Mastema is a band committed
to championing the virtues of secular reason. Songs like Pastor of Muppets and
The Creationist unapologetically criticize the twisted psychology and
pseudo-science of Scientology and Creationism. Others, such as America, Inc.,
condemn the greed of the military-industrial complex, while Pop Culture attacks
the idiocracy of a society in which substance is sacrificed on the altar of
fashionable ignorance. Yet not without a sense of humor or optimistic spirit, on
the other side of the coin are our songs that celebrate the joys of life whether
they be hedonistic (Anticipation, The One) or alcoholic (Requiem for my Liver)
in nature.
