O

Obie

An eyelight mounted on the camera. (Lighting)

Octave

The interval between two sounds having a basic frequency ratio of 2 to 1. (Sound)

Off-air

Signals that are not currently going out to broadcast or videotape recording.

Offline

The videotape editing process whereby the final edit list is compiled, usually in a more inexpensive edit room, in preparation for the on-line edit. (Video)

Off-line

Not in use. Inactive.

Off-line editing

Editing that is done using inexpensive, non-broadcast-quality equipment to produce an Edit Decision List (EDL) which will be used later for assembling a broadcast quality program using more expensive, high quality equipment.

Off-Scale

Outside the range of the standard light values of a printer. (Laboratory)

Offset paper:

Term for uncoated book paper.

Offsetting:

Using an intermediate surface used to transfer ink. Also, an unpleasant happening when the images of freshly printed sheets transfer images to each other.

Ok sheet:

Final approved color inking sheet before production begins.

On-air

The video signal in question is being broadcasted or videotaped. In Kaleidoscope, a portion of a channel's picture is on screen or its output is being combined with another digital effects processor to create the final video output.

On-edge switching

A digital picture manipulator term meaning to switch input crosspoints (video sources) when the back (hidden) side of a double-sided transformed image rotates to the front and the front (visible) side rotates to the back. The switching occurs at the moment when only the edge of the image is visible.

One-Light Print

A print made with a single printer light setting for all shots in the film being printed. A common method to produce a 'daily' color print. (Laboratory)

Online

The videotape editing process that creates the final video edit master, including effects, from the offline edit list. (Video)

Opacity

The ratio of the amount of light falling on a surface to the amount of light which is transmitted. (Lighting)

Opacity:

The amount of show-through on a printed sheet. The more opacity or the thicker the paper the less show-through. (The thicker/heavier the paper the higher the cost.)

Opaque Leader

Any strip of flexible, optically opaque material used to space picture in A/B roll film cutting and editing. (Film Editing)

Optical Disc

optical disc -- Removable storage medium, such as DVD and CD, that is read (and written) with laser light. See also magnetic disk.

Optical Effects

A laboratory or print procedure in which shots are modified by use of an optical printer. These are most commonly seen as fades and dissolves, however, it can include a wide range of special effects procedures. (Laboratory)

Optical Printer

A printer in which an image of the original is transferred to raw film stock by means of light and a lens system. (Laboratory)

Optical Sound

A sound track in which the recording uses variation of a photographic image.

Optical Stereo

A film recording system replayed by scanning the stereo tracks by means of a photo cell lamp.

Orange Book

The Orange Book is the specification for CD-Recordable.

organic dye

The data layer of CD-R discs is made from either cyanine or phthalocyanine dye which is melted during the recording process. Where the dye is melted, it becomes opaque or refractive, scattering the reading laser beam so it is not reflected back into the readers sensors. The difference between reflected and non-reflected light is interpreted by the player as a binary signal.

Oscillator

An electronic device that generates alternating-current at a frequency determined by the values of the components in its circuits.

Outgoing Scene

The first scene of a dissolve or wipe effect which changes into the second, or incoming scene.

Outline halftone:

Removing the background of a picture or silhouetting an image in a picture.

Output

The current, voltage, power, or driving force delivered by a circuit or device.

Output impedance

The impedance a device presents to its load. The impedance measured at the output terminals of a transducer with the load disconnected and all impressed driving forces taken as zero.

Output return loss

A measure of the accuracy of the impedance match between a signal source (such as a cable) and its terminating load. An unequal impedance match causes some of the power from the source to be reflected back to the source, resulting in signal distortion. The ratio of the signal voltage at the load to that voltage reflected back to the source is defined as the return loss. This ratio is generally expressed in decibels (dB).

Output to output isolation

The ratio of attenuation provided by the output stage to an interfering signal driving one output compared to a second output. The ratio is measured at the second output. A good specification protects output signals against incorrect cabling, such as accidental untermination or double termination.

Out-Take

A take of a scene which is not used for printing or for the final assembly of a film.

Over/under

the number of CDs above or below the actual ordered quantity; generally, any order is considered complete at +/-10%; over/under quantities are billed/credited on a per/unit basis.

Overlapping and Matching Action

Repeating part of the action in one shot at the beginning of the next shot, or covering the action with two or more cameras, then matching the overlaps on the editing table for the purpose of making a smooth cut on action. (Film Editing)

Overlay:

The transparent cover sheet on artwork often used for instructions.

Overprint

When a page object overlays another, the image colour in the top object can be set to overprint so that the upper object colour overprints the lower object colour. You should take into account that process inks are not opaque so the colour will combine to create a third colour if the file is separated on output to the four process colours.

Overrun or overs:

Copies printed in excess of the specified quantity. (Printing trade terms allow for + - 10 % to represent a completed order.)
