Universal asynchronous receiver/transmitter. An integrated circuit that interfaces a microprocessor to a serial I/O port.

 

UDF

Universal Disc Format -- The file system used for DVDs (technically, the condensed micro-UDF). Designed to be uniform across all DVDs and be flexible enough to support a wide variety of uses of DVD. See also ISO-9660, UDF Bridge.

 

UDF Bridge

A DVD file system combining the older ISO-9660 file system for CDs and micro-UDF for DVDs to provide backward compatibility for DVD players and computers.

 

Under-run:

Production of fewer copies than ordered. See over run.

 

Underscore

Music that provides emotional or atmospheric background to the primary dialog or narration onscreen.

 

Unity gain

An amplifier or active circuit in which the output amplitude is the same as the input amplitude.

 

Unsqueezed Print

A print in which the distorted image of an anamorphic negative has been corrected for normal projection.

 

Up:

Printing two or three up means printing multiple copies of the same image on the same sheet.

 

Uplink

The earth station that transmits signals to a satellite for relay to another location on the ground.

 

USB

Universal Serial Bus-- A digital data interface standard providing a Plug-and-Play interface for personal computers. Typically used for lower-speed peripherals such as mice, keyboards, printers, and scanners. Also used for interfacing to digital cameras. The existing USB 1 standard provides up to 12Mbps (million bits per second) data rate. The new USB 2 standard supports up to 480Mbps data rate. See also FireWire.

 

UV coating:

Liquid laminate bonded and cured with ultraviolet light. Environmentally friendly.
